Course Description:

This intermediate watercolour course expands upon the skills learned in Level 1, offering students the opportunity to further refine their technique through a diverse range of still life subjects and reference photos. Each week, students will work from new subjects, honing their ability to capture textures, lighting, and form in watercolour. (Newcomers are welcome as long as they are already familiar with the basics of watercolour.)

The class will continue to explore both detailed drawing followed by watercolour application and a more intuitive, "alla prima" approach where painting is done directly with minimal preliminary sketching. With a focus on developing a more expressive and confident style, students will experiment with different media, including mixing gouache and pen-and-ink with watercolour for added depth and complexity.

Through weekly assignments, students will learn to problem-solve more complex compositions, enhance their colour mixing, and strengthen their overall watercolour technique. This class is designed to help artists build on their existing skills while embracing new challenges and creative growth.

Classes will be held indoors in a classroom setting.  We will work from photos and still-life subjects. En plein air materials and procedures will be discussed.

A list of recommended materials will be sent to students after the first week of the course.

Accessibility note: This class will take place on the second level of the building. We unfortunately do not have an elevator or stair lift at this time. Students enrolled in the class will need to be able to navigate the stairs to access the classroom. We are happy to assist in any way we can to make this more manageable for students with mobility constraints.
